Beacon Lighting to celebrate 80th Anniversary of D Day 6th June 2024 20:30

6 June @ 8:35 pm - 9:25 pm

The 6th of June 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed. In 1944 Operation Overlord saw over 5,000 ships and landing craft set down more than 130,000 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.

The bravery and sacrifice of those people in securing the peace and freedom we enjoy today will be observed by the lighting of beacons around the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.

Siston Parish Council are taking part with other villages, towns, cities and organisations of all sizes to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day by lighting a beacon at 9.15pm on 6th June 2024, in commemoration of one of the most momentous achievements in living memory. It is expected 1500 Beacons will be lit through the UK and overseas.

Like previous Beacon lightings, the event will take place on top of Siston Hill, Siston Common. To help start the service promptly we are asking residents to congregate from 8.30pm. There will be 1940’s quartet and a Scottish piper providing entertainment prior to the event starting.

We encourage residents to walk or cycle to where the Beacon is located. For residents less able a shuttle bus will pick-up from Warmley Community Centre from 8.15pm. If you require transport please contact the Clerk at sistonpc@gmail.com, as this will give us an idea of numbers.
